Maximising Storage Efficiency with Heavy-Duty Stillages and Post Pallets

Warehouse space is expensive, and heavy or awkward loads have a habit of eating into it fast. Machinery components, castings, automotive parts, construction materials and bagged goods all need somewhere secure to sit without sprawling across the floor. Fixed racking is one answer, but it is not the only one, and it is not something we manufacture. What Lowe Stillages & Cages does build is heavy-duty stillages, post pallets and stacking storage that let you use the full height of your building while keeping loads mobile, protected and easy to reach.

This guide explains how the right steel storage equipment improves density, safety and organisation on a busy site, and how to choose products that will still be earning their keep in ten years’ time.

Stackable stillages: vertical storage without permanent racking

The single biggest gain in most warehouses is unused height. Fixed racking captures that height but ties you to one bay layout and a fixed footprint. Stackable steel stillages do much the same job while staying flexible: load them, stack them, and unstack them wherever the work needs to happen that week.

  • Full-height storage: our heavy-duty metal stillages are designed to stack several units high, so a single floor position can hold what would otherwise need a whole aisle of shelving.
  • Load reaches the load: stacked stillages can be split down and moved by forklift as demand shifts, rather than forcing every pick back to a static rack.
  • No fixed installation: there is no bolt-down racking to design around, sign off or dismantle when your process changes.

For lighter, high-frequency picking where you still want tiers of open shelves, a mesh shelving unit gives you visibility of stock and quick retrieval without the weight of solid steel.

Enhanced load-bearing capacity

Heavy loads punish weak storage. We build our stillages and post pallets from structural steel sections, with reinforced frames and bases sized to the loads they will carry rather than to a generic catalogue figure. That means you can store large machinery, automotive parts, construction materials and other industrial goods with confidence that the unit underneath will not distort or fail under weight.

Where lifting is involved, this matters even more. A stillage that will be craned or slung must be designed and, where appropriate, load-tested for that duty. Our certified lifting stillages are built and tested specifically for overhead handling. If you are unsure whether a unit is rated for lifting, our LOLER compliance guide explains what the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 require and how to stay on the right side of them.

Increased storage density in a fixed footprint

Density is about getting more into the same square metres. Post pallets and collapsible pallets are two of the most effective tools for this because they let you stack loads safely without crushing the goods beneath them.

  • Post pallets take the weight of the units stacked above through the corner posts, not through the product. Our post pallet range suits everything from castings to boxed components, and the combined post pallet and storage cage adds mesh sides where you also need containment.
  • Collapsible metal pallets fold flat when empty, so return transport and off-season storage cost a fraction of rigid units. See the collapsible metal pallet range for standard footprints.
  • IBC and drum storage stacks liquids and powders safely up rather than out. The twin IBC rack holds two 1000-litre tanks, while the Load King IBC rack and drum shelving gives you adjustable shelves for mixed drum and container loads.

Stacking safely is a skill in itself. Overloaded or poorly interlocked stacks are one of the most common causes of warehouse collapse. Our guide to keeping stillages stable covers stack heights, weight limits and how to prevent tip-overs.

Improved accessibility and organisation

Dense storage is only useful if you can still find and reach what you need. Well-specified stillages and pallets support fast, orderly picking:

  • Open and drop fronts let operators load and unload without unstacking the whole tower.
  • Adjustable and removable shelving lets you reconfigure a unit as your product mix changes.
  • Consistent, stackable footprints keep aisles square and forklift movement predictable.

Small details make a big difference here. Clear labelling, colour coding and standardised unit sizes turn a crowded store into a system your team can navigate at a glance. Our range of stillage consumables, including label holders and end caps, helps keep everything identifiable and protected.

Durability and longevity

Steel storage is a long-term investment, so build quality is everything. We use heavy-gauge steel, sound welding and appropriate finishes so units survive the knocks, weather and repeated handling of a working environment. Well-made stillages need little more than routine inspection and occasional touch-up rather than constant repair or early replacement.

That said, “fit and forget” is a myth for any load-bearing equipment. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, storage and handling equipment must be maintained in efficient working order and inspected where deterioration could cause a hazard. Our PUWER guide for stillages explains what inspection and maintenance actually involves, and the stillage safety guide covers safe handling and training on the shop floor.

Why choose a UKCA-compliant UK manufacturer

When you buy load-bearing steel equipment, the manufacturer behind it matters as much as the product. As a UK manufacturer, Lowe Stillages & Cages designs and builds to recognised standards and applies UKCA marking where it is required, so you have documented, defensible evidence of compliance rather than an unbranded import of unknown provenance.

  • Compliance you can prove: equipment designed, built and, where relevant, load-tested to the correct standards, with the paperwork to back it up.
  • Quality assurance: consistent materials, welding and finish across every batch, not a lucky dip.
  • Due diligence: sourcing from a known, accountable UK manufacturer supports your own responsibilities under LOLER and PUWER.
  • Real expertise: we manufacture this equipment every day and can advise on the right design for your loads, handling method and site.

How to specify the right storage for your loads

The most efficient store starts with an honest look at what you are storing and how it moves. Before you buy, it is worth working through weight, dimensions, stack height, handling method and any containment or lifting needs. Our buyer’s and design guide walks through those decisions step by step, and if you cannot find an off-the-shelf match, we build to order through our bespoke stillage service.

When you are ready for pricing, giving us accurate load and dimension details up front means a faster, more accurate quote. The accurate quote guide explains exactly what information to send.

Make your warehouse work harder

You do not need permanent racking to reclaim your unused height. The right stackable stillages, post pallets and IBC storage give you density, flexibility and safety in one, all built in the UK to standards you can rely on. Tell us what you store and how you handle it, and we will help you specify equipment that fits your space and your loads.
