Buying stillages looks straightforward until the first delivery arrives and the units are the wrong size, won’t stack safely, or can’t take the load you actually need. Getting the specification right the first time protects your budget, your storage space and, most importantly, your team. 1. Not defining your actual requirements first
The single biggest mistake is ordering before you’ve mapped how the stillage will be used. A unit that suits static warehouse storage may be wrong for stillages that are craned, forked, stacked outdoors, or shipped in a supply chain and handled dozens of times a week.
Before you buy, be clear on:
- The product going in it (weight, dimensions, fragility, whether it’s loose, palletised or bagged)
- How it will be moved: forklift, pallet truck, crane, or automated handling
- Where it will live: indoors, outdoors, in transit, or a mix
- Whether you need mesh sides for visibility and ventilation, or sheeted sides for protection and containment
2. Underestimating load capacity
Buying a stillage that can't safely carry your products' weight is dangerous and expensive. Overloading distorts frames, weakens welds and, if the unit is lifted, creates a genuine risk to anyone below it.
Always work to a stated Safe Working Load (SWL), not a guess. If your stillages will be lifted by crane or forklift-mounted attachment, they fall under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and should be load-tested and certified for lifting. 4. Ignoring compatibility with your existing kit
If you already run a fleet of stillages, cages or collapsible metal pallets, new units need to work alongside them. Mismatched footprints, stacking foot positions or fork-pocket spacing lead to units that won’t nest, stack or interlock with what you already own, and often force costly modifications later.

5. Getting size and dimensions wrong
Stillages that are slightly too tall to double-stack under your racking, too wide for your aisles, or too deep for your vehicle bed waste space and money on every single movement. Small dimensional errors multiply quickly across a fleet.

6. Overlooking stackability
If stacking is part of your operation, non-stackable stillages waste vertical space and can create instability when improvised. Poorly designed stacking is also a common cause of collapses.

7. Forgetting your material handling method
A stillage that can't be handled by the equipment you actually own is a costly oversight. Fork pockets that don’t suit your truck, missing crane lifting points, or the wrong base type for a pallet truck all cause delays and near-misses.
Match the unit to your handling method from the outset:
- Forklift: correctly sized and positioned fork pockets, ideally with fork guides
- Crane or hoist: certified lifting points and LOLER-compliant load testing
- Pallet truck: an open or suitable base entry

8. Neglecting safety and security features

Choosing purely on headline price, without checking who you’re buying from, is a false economy. A reputable UK manufacturer should be able to talk you through steel grades, weld standards, lead times and, crucially, certification.
Ask about:
- UKCA marking where it applies, which is the relevant conformity marking for products placed on the market in Great Britain
- Load testing and certification for any stillage that will be lifted
- Quality processes, aftercare and the ability to repair or replace units
