The benefits of bespoke metal stillage design

Off-the-shelf stillages come in a wide range of sizes, designs and materials, from steel and aluminium to plastic. Often the only obvious difference is the price, and it is tempting to pick the cheapest option. But for many applications that is a false economy.

1. The right material for the job

A shiny new metal stillage may not stay that way for long. Its working life can be tough: repeated forklift handling, stacking, outdoor storage, chemical exposure and heavy, awkward loads all take their toll. Specify the wrong material or gauge and you end up with a stillage that deforms, corrodes or fails far sooner than it should, and you pay again to replace it.

A bespoke approach starts with the material selection rather than working backwards from a stock design. That might mean a heavier steel section for high point loads, hot-dip galvanising or a durable powder coat for outdoor and marine use, or a lighter frame where every kilogram of tare weight matters for transport. The aim is simple: a stillage that is genuinely fit for a lifetime of duty, not just fit for the showroom.

2. Higher, verified load capacity

Two stillages of the same size can behave very differently under load. Units mass-produced from the cheapest materials are usually designed down to a price, whereas a purpose-engineered stillage can carry substantially more because the frame, joints and welds are sized around your real unit load.

UKCA, LOLER and PUWER

As a UK manufacturer, we build to current British standards and mark conforming products with UKCA, the UK Conformity Assessed marking. Two sets of regulations are especially relevant to stillages and cages:

  • LOLER 1998 (the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) applies wherever a stillage is designed to be lifted, for example with integral lifting eyes or fork pockets used for hoisting. It governs how lifting equipment is selected, marked and thoroughly examined.
  • PUWER 1998 (the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) covers work equipment more broadly, requiring it to be suitable, maintained and safe for its intended use.

Getting these right at the design stage, with the correct rating, marking and, where needed, certification and test evidence, protects your people and keeps you the right side of the regulations. It is far easier to engineer compliance into a bespoke stillage than to retrofit it to a stock unit that was never intended for the task.

A robust stillage does not have to be complicated. The simplest design, manufactured from the correct materials with sound welds and a suitable finish, will often outperform a fussier one.
