When it is warranted
Plenty of operations are well served by a standard post pallet or mesh stillage, and we supply those too. Engineered design earns its place at the point where a stillage stops being simple storage and becomes part of a controlled handling process.
In practice that tends to be one of a few situations: you work in a regulated sector such as nuclear, defence or aerospace where handling is audited; the components are heavy, awkward or high in value; you are standardising a fleet across sites and need every unit to behave the same way; or your handling procedures are documented and inspected, and the equipment has to stand up to that scrutiny.
The test is a blunt one. If a deformed frame, an inconsistent unit or an unplanned failure would cost you more than an inconvenience — a damaged high-value part, a stopped line, a finding at audit — the engineering is cheaper than the consequence.
What engineered means
Engineered means the design starts from your application rather than from an existing product that is close enough. That means resolving the load path before the steel is chosen: what the unit weighs loaded, where the centre of gravity actually sits, and what happens to the frame when the load is off-centre or the unit is only part-filled. Those are the conditions that show up in service, not the neatly centred load in the brochure photograph.
Stacking is treated as a design case rather than an assumption. Units that stack in service are designed for stacked loading, with locating features that position them positively instead of relying on an operator judging it by eye. The handling interface gets the same treatment — fork pockets and clearances sized to your trucks, or a defined interface where units meet towing, pallet trucks or automated handling.
This is also where the honest answer on lifting belongs. Most stillages are forklift-handled work equipment under PUWER and should not be craned. Where a unit genuinely needs to be lifted, it is designed for lifting from the start, individually identified, and supplied with examination and testing records so a competent person can set the inspection regime. A lug retro-fitted to a frame that was never designed for it is not an engineered solution.
Traceability
Engineered units are supplied with the identification an audit expects: UKCA marking where applicable, Safe Working Load plates and serial numbers, and documentation you can file with your technical or QHSE records. The load assumptions behind the rating are written down rather than implied, so the basis of the figure is available when somebody asks for it.
Serialisation matters more on a fleet than it first appears. When each unit carries a number, damage traces to a specific unit rather than a guess, inspection history attaches to something real, and a replacement batch can be built to the same retained drawing years later without re-opening the design.
Everything is designed and manufactured in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. Standard builds typically ship in 3–4 weeks; bespoke units are confirmed on your quote, and repeat batches come off the drawing we already hold.
Questions
A standard stillage is a proven product you select and adapt your process around. An engineered stillage is developed around your application — load behaviour, handling method, stacking and duty cycle are all design inputs, and the unit is documented and serialised so its performance is predictable across a fleet.
If the stillage is straightforward storage in a general warehouse, standard is usually the right call and costs less. If risk, regulation or repeatability are involved — audited handling, high-value or awkward loads, or a fleet that has to behave identically across sites — engineered design gives you assurance a catalogue unit cannot. It is defined during design and verification — engineering calculations, jig-built consistency and, where relevant, physical testing. It appears on a durable plate on the unit and in the documentation supplied with it.
